Introduction: from diseases caused by microrganisms, the sexually transmitted (STD) are of accentuated epidemic importance thus it is necessary to focus on the prevention, above all in adolescents, because we are one of the countries of larger notification of these diseases. Objective: For so much, the study sought to characterize the level and quality of knowledge about STD, among high-school level students of state and private schools. Methods: this study is characterized as exploratory, descriptive, with approach in quantity and quality, accomplished at four schools of the city of Patos - PB, with a sample of 80 students, which comprise the age group from 14 to 20 years old. An educational questionnaire was used as a collector instrument of the data. Results: the evaluation points out the lack of knowledge offered by the school on the theme (38.75% of state schools, 65.5% of private). Five per cent were or are bearers of STD (public school), in the private schools they are 7,5%. In both parts the illustration prevailed as instructor regarding STD (43,75% in the public system and 35% in the private); 38,75% of the scholars of the public system and 62,5% of the private considered the information offered by the school, insufficient and 43,75% of the ellementary school has active sexual life, in the second add 40%. Both categories would guide a bearer of STD to seek a doctor and to take prevent on methods when it maintains sexual relations. Conclusion: the presence of deficit of the knowledge was observed in the appraised sample; Stressing the distinction of knowledge patterns among the schools, the eminent need to adapt and to apply teaching patterns to the adolescents. The sample of public school did not demonstrate larger vulnerability to acquire STD compared to private schools knowledge about was also higher.
